Twenty-two years since its premiere, the beautiful garden with sands and water pools reemerges
Sankai Juku is a Butoh company based mainly in France and Japan and has captivated audiences through its sophisticated choreographic expression and beauty of forms. Their highly acclaimed work “Hibiki” is reborn as a re-creation work for the first time since 2010. In 2002, the work received the Laurence Olivier Award, the most prestigious award in performing arts in the category of Best New Dance Production, and has been performed in twenty-one countries around the world. With the sound of water dripping in the dark and sands covering the entire stage, the work delicately delivers an image of birth and death, the internal nature that humans universally share, in a garden with sands and water pools, where light and shadow intersect using the physique of Butoh dancers and emotionally evoke an image within the audience. Please enjoy Ushio Amagatsu’s aesthetics transcending the words and the world of Butoh with sophisticated beauty through a work that has been highly acclaimed worldwide for twenty-two years since its premiere.
